IO Interactive took a big risk in changing the format of its long-running Hitman franchise to an episodic release model. However, the results have been warmly received by most fans, and it seems the studio has high hopes the series will continue in this vein.

Hitman recently passed the halfway point of the seven episodes currently scheduled for release. One fan took to Twitter to ask about the future of the series once its current run has been completed, and the response from IO Interactive is good news for anyone who’s been enjoying its new format.

A tweet from the official Hitman account revealed that the studio is planning for three “seasons” of the game, including the one that’s playing out at present. It’s unclear whether the other two would follow annually — there was a four-year gap between this year’s installment and its predecessor, Absolution.

It’s also worth noting that while IO Interactive would like to make three seasons of the game, these plans aren’t official as of yet. Even a second season is yet to be confirmed, according to a report from Eurogamer.

However, it’s easy to see how the game could stretch to three seasons. Between the three episodes that have already been released and their accompanying prologue, it’s clear that the new Hitman is delving deep into the series’ history while forging on with interesting new additions to the canon and a compelling overarching plot.

The next episode of Hitman, scheduled to be released August 16, will transport players to Bangkok, where they’ll be tasked with taking out the frontman of an indie band. Two more episodes are set to hit in September and October, before the complete edition of the game launches at the end of 2016.
