The swimmer is scheduled to swim in his fifth 200m butterfly Olympic final on Tuesday, against Chad le Clos, who took gold in the event over Phelps by 0.05 seconds in 2012.
In the semifinals on Monday night, the two did a head-to-head battle in the same heat - and Mr Phelps managed to beat his rival - finishing at 1:54.12 to le Clos’ 1:55.19 seconds.
Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi won the heat in one minute, 53.96 seconds.
