Andy Burnham has won the race to become Labour's candidate for mayor of Greater Manchester.

The shadow home secretary beat Ivan Lewis, the former shadow Northern Ireland secretary, and Tony Lloyd, the interim mayor.

Mr Burnham is expected to leave the shadow cabinet and step down as MP if he wins the race, which will be voted on next year.

When asked who he was supporting in the Labour leadership election, Mr Burnham said: "These are difficult times for our party... I will be remaining neutral in the leadership race."

His response was mocked by Labour MPs, with Michael Dugher commenting on Twitter: "What did I do in the war, son? Oh I remained neutral."
