According to a new report from CNet, yesterday Samsung Electronics America has announced that it will acquire Dacor; a California-based privately held company that manufacturers premium-tier kitchen appliances. Dacor was founded in the year 1965; it is headquartered in a 325,000 square-foot manufacturing facility located in California and distributes luxury kitchen appliances throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Canada. Although the exact details of the deal are currently unknown, Samsung’s acquisition of Dacor could be viewed as an indicator of the South Korean tech giant’s growing interest in becoming a larger supplier of smart, high-end appliances.
Samsung did not reveal too many details regarding the acquisition of Dacor, and there is no information as to how much Samsung Electronics America has to pay in order to seal the deal. However, according to reports, the company did confirm that although Dacor will become a subsidiary if Samsung Electronics, Dacor will maintain its brand and corporate identity, with no changes expected to take place in regards to US-based manufacturing and operations. According to CNET, neither Samsung nor Dacor has been willing to comment further on the matter, so we assume that more details will be revealed once the acquisition will be complete.
Samsung Electronics already has a stake in the home appliance market, with various types of products including smart refrigerators. On the other hand, Dacor manufactures premium products in a wide variety of categories, including ovens, wall ovens, ranges, refrigerators, dishwashers and so on. In the year 2013, Dacor entertained the notion of designing and manufacturing smart-appliance and took the veil off a wall oven treated with a 7-inch tablet powered by Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich. A year later Dacor unveiled a smart range called the Discovery iQ, which was also treated with a 7-inch Android tablet, along with a very premium price tag of $11,999. It’s interesting to note that Dacor is also a longtime partner of BMW Group DesignworksUSA, and in the year 2010 this collaboration led to the creation of the Discovery iQ Controller and Distinctive 36-inch gas cooktop. Dacor also won numerous awards, including the 2013 Good Design Award, and four Best of Kitchen & Bath Industry Show awards in 2014.
